Cooking tips for cutting back calories!

  • Instead of using mayo, substitute low-fat cottage cheese or plain non-fat yogurt to make tuna salad.

  • Reaching for the BBQ or honey mustard sauce? Instead try experimenting with the spices in your cupboard! My favorites are Italian seasonings and ground pepper. In addition, adding a small pinch of salt to anything that you cook brings out flavors. Canned and packaged goods usually have a lot of sodium and do not need extra salt. Too much sodium in your diet can be detrimental to your health.

  • Replace half the butter in cake, muffin and brownie recipes with an equal amount of applesauce or mashed bananas. You'll save about 100 calories for every tablespoon you swap.
  • Making meatballs? Mix half the amount of ground beef the recipe calls for with half as much cooked brown rice.
